Professor Adnan Tufail

Professor Adnan Tufail, MBBS, MD, FRCOphth, is one of the leading ophthalmic surgeons in the UK.

His areas of interest and research include Medical Retina, Uveitis and Cataract, and he specialises in medical retina disorders, and cataract surgery in patients with retinal disorders. He is the clinical and research lead at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In fact, Adnan has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 2002, and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL (University College London).

Professor Tufail has achieved a lot in his career. Not only is he one of the best surgeons in the UK, he was a co-principal investigator in the seminal ABC Trial that focused on examining bevacizumab for neovascular AMD, which had a profound effect on eyecare in the UK. In fact, this ABC Trial became a cornerstone for and critical in defining the use of anti-VEGF treatment protocols for wet-AMD therapy within the NHS.

His primary areas of interest are novel therapies for dry AMD, choroidal neovascularisation (including wet AMD) and diabetic retinopathy and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles on his research. He is involved in laboratory as well as clinical research into treating a number of rare retinal diseases. Prof Tufail has research interests in novel treatments of diabetic retinopathy and is involved in translational drug and cellular therapy development, imaging and pathology of diabetic retinopathy.

In addition he is involved in projects on big data and machine learning applications to diabetic eye disease and screening.
